    First time owner here. Yours is actually potty trained? And I've heard some stories about horrific bites. Are they good with other animals? Is his wings clipped? I don't think I want mine to have clipped wings. Should I?

    • @GuidetoGreenCheekConures
      @GuidetoGreenCheekConures 5 місяців тому

      Congrats on your new green cheek! Marco is potty trained in the sense that he poops on command, but he does not hold it in until we take him to the bathroom. He, and all conures avoid pooping where they sleep so they do hold their poop all night and he will wait to poop in the right place for a treat if we take him directly to his potty training spot. We have made some gains recently in always having him go in the sink and rewarding this and then training him to fly to the sink and poop on command for a reward. He has taken it upon himself to fly down to the sink when he has to go to the bathroom and poop for a big reward. BUT if he is too far from the sink to comfortably fly, in his opinion, the he just poops wherever 🤦‍♀️. I think it’s possible to almost fully potty train him in this way, it just takes more time and attention than I have given it. There are definitely videos out there showing you how to potty train your bird. I think the smaller ones like green cheeks will always have some accidents, but can be generally potty trained if you are very consistent and very attentive with training this behavior. They are very smart and can learn many tricks and behaviors relatively easily and remember them for years without rehearsal. As for biting, it is surprising how painful a green cheek bite can be. It often breaks the skin and bruises you. You cannot help but yelp when then bite you no holds bard, but if they have a trusting relationship with you and you respect the boundaries they set up they will often just give you warning bites that are really nothing. Unfortunately, we can’t trust Marco with anyone out of the family while in our home, as he will seem fine, but suddenly become fearful or offended and unload one of his very painful bites on our guests. It’s very unfortunate, because he is a social guy and likes people and would love to hang out with our guests, but he cannot control his fear instinct. There are few animals that would be good to share a home with a green cheek; maybe fish with a good covering to their aquarium, rabbits, Ginnie pigs, hamsters, turtles, frogs, salamanders, and small lizards. Anything with a prey drive is a huge danger to your bird. Most dogs have a history of being bread to be birders and ratters and would have a natural inclination to kill your bird. If a dog likes to play fetch then it would probably kill your bird if it had a chance. Cats are obvious, they love to kill birds and have a high prey drive, rats will kill birds and other small prey if they get a chance. So will ferrets. There are lots of snakes and large reptiles who kill and eat birds for snacks. Even another bird and even another conure can be difficult to introduce. Birds can be very territorial and food aggressive and there is no guarantee they will like each other. If one bird is bigger than the other bird, the bigger bird can seriously injure or even kill the other bird. Introducing 2 conures can also be very dangerous as they often choose to fight first and ask questions later. It is quite a process to introduce birds to one another and see if they will accept one another. There are videos out there about this too. My birds wings are not clipped. I highly recommend you do the same. Birds are meant to fly and if you take that from them you are setting them up for a lifetime of physical and psychological health issues. It is also their primary mode of transport and the way they can flee danger. I personally think it is cruel to take their flight from them. I think many would agree with me. I am glad you are already thinking along these lines. The main hazards you have with not clipping their wings is flying away or hitting a window. They may fly away if you leave a door or window open and it will be very difficult to recover them because they become so terrified once they are outside and fly to the highest tree and hide. They also lack the skill to fly down once they are up there because they don’t have the opportunity to practice this in your home. You will have to be cautious to the point of paranoia about doors and windows being open. All of our windows have screens for Marco’s protection and he loves to sit at the screen and pretend he is outside in the summers. As for the windows, In certain light your windows will appear clear to your bird and if he takes flight in fear he could run into your window in panic and seriously injure or kill himself. Flying around in fear happens more than you might think because green cheeks are quite jumpy, so if you drop a pen, clatter a dish or sneeze to hard you are likely to send your bird into a panicked flight. It’s short lived and not a big deal as long as they don’t run into your windows. I spent time showing Marco all the windows multiple times so he knew you couldn’t fly through them. We also keep our windows a bit on the dirty side so it is easier to see that there is glass there. You can also buy those window stickers that show outside birds that this is a window and it would protect both your conure and outside birds. Thank you for watching and asking these important questions. We’d love to help you on your journey with your bird. it is a long and important relationship; conures live longer than most marriages last so it is worth it to develop and maintain the best relationship with them. And in the end, you are all they have. Take care of your little guy and let us know how it goes.

    Congratulations on the addition to your loving family. Please remember that Conures are very affectionate little parrots and like a lot of attention! Marco could get very sad and jealous if/when he realizes that you're spending more time with your new baby than him. If you sit on the sofa holding your new baby also let Marco stand on the sofa or your shoulder so he'll know that although there's an addition to the family, nothing has changed between you and him; you love him the same! I learned that the hard way. Btw, I'm very sorry but I don't know what I did but my first comment with your reply was deleted. Take care and God bless you and your wonderful family 🙏💐💕

They do always have to be well supervised, but they have both learned to respect each other’s boundaries and have accepted each other as a part of the family. Marco is out and about with the family all the time unless we are away or have guests over that make him uncomfortable. I try to remind Marco that he will always be my green baby.

    How many love bites does Marco give you throughout the day?🤔👍🤣

    • @GuidetoGreenCheekConures
      @GuidetoGreenCheekConures 8 місяців тому

      Good question! The short answer is: depends what you are asking him to do. He is really aware of signs that we might be going out so may bite and put up a fuss when he knows its time to go back in his room. He will also bite as punishment if he feels he has been left alone too long. We usually put him down and ask him to try that step up again without a bite if he does that. He will also bite if he feels you are trying to take something he has decided is his (this could be anything he is interested in or thinks is yummy.) He also will bite if you scratch his head wrong or if you wear a hoodie or a hat. I think this is an old memory of cage cleaners from when he was a baby, but I don't know. So long answer is, I can't give you an exact number, but it can range from 1 to a lot depending on what is happening within a day and how much we are respecting his boundaries and how much he is respecting ours. I should also say, Marco has the ability to draw blood with his bites, but he almost always scales way back to a minor pinch to add punctuation to whatever point he is trying to make. I think more is possible in reducing his bites, but we continue to take it one step at a time with him.

      Green cheeks can be bought by treats. Go slow. Place a sesame seed or a safflower seed in his cage or area multiple times a day as you walk by. He will soon be looking for you, expecting the treat that comes with you. Then do the same thing, but stand near by as he eats it until he is used to that. Then see if he will take a treat from your fingers, but move away to allow him to enjoy the treat without feeling threatened by your proximity. Then see if he will take treats and eat them with you standing by. Once he is regularly taking treats from you, see if he is willing to come out just a little bit of his cage (which he thinks is his territory) to accept a treat from you. Now each time you pass by and give him a treat have him come out a little bit more from his cage to collect his treat. It’s okay if he goes back to the safety of his cage to enjoy his treat. Once he is used to coming outside of his cage to accept a treat regularly then commit to spending some time offering treat after treat from your hands as long as he is outside of the cage. He will learn to sit outside of the cage for a treat and become more accustomed to being out. Then you can start with simple trick training or step ups. Be sure you are patient and don’t push his boundaries and he will begin to trust you. It just takes time for a bird to trust, but the good thing is that their trust can be bought with treats, patience, kindness and respect. Please look into target training from the Bird Tricks channel. They will have lots of good ideas for you to build a loving relationship with your green cheek. Good luck! And let us know how it goes.
